In 2013, in the midst of a challenging personal time, Lauren Harper, founder of Have You Met Charlie, found solace in creating a jewellery line called Mintcloud Studio. The joy of crafting and connecting with fellow creatives at local markets in Adelaide became a bright spot in her life and over the course of a year, she had met an amazing community of artisans.
“A thought began to blossom: wouldn't it be incredible to have a space where people could access all these beautiful, handmade products anytime, rather than waiting for the once-every-three-month market events?”
That idea sparked the creation of Have You Met Charlie? It started as a way to bring the market experience into a more accessible space while also giving small local businesses the opportunity to showcase their work outside of the traditional market scene. Over the next two years, the store transformed into a vibrant gift shop featuring incredible local Australian brands and makers.
“What began as a simple idea to bring joy and creativity into one place has evolved into a hub for unique, thoughtful gifts and artisan goods.”
As Lauren has learnt, entrepreneurship can be all-consuming. Finding balance isn't always straightforward. Sometimes, everything runs smoothly, and other times, unexpected challenges throw you off course.
“Over time, I’ve learned that having a strong team around me is essential. Each person brings something valuable to the table, and together, we can handle the surprises that come our way. Setting boundaries in business is a constant work in progress, but it’s crucial to creating that sense of balance in an entrepreneurial journey.”
Adelaide holds a special place in Lauren’s heart. She was born and raised here, and despite all her travels, always finds her way back home.
“For me, Adelaide is the perfect blend of city life and accessibility. You can get around easily, and if you ever need to escape the hustle, there’s the beach on one side and the hills on the other.”
We asked Lauren what her ultimate day in Adelaide looks like.
“Some of my favourite days are spent at Port Elliot, where I watch for dolphins while my partner surfs. Sometimes we even go squid fishing before treating ourselves to something from the famous Port Elliot Bakery. For a delicious night out in the city, I love Fugazzi. Their Gnocco Fritto is an absolute must-try!”
